This is an epic tour during the last 2 hours of daylight, which is the best time of day to see deer, elk, and moose in Pike National Forest near Woodland Park. Your guide will capture the whole tour with photos, videos, and a 3D map of our route that can be found on your own webpage from Relive.
Travel along the historic Midland Railroad route to the base of Pikes Peak. Climb America’s Mountain along the historic Pikes Peak Hill Climb road to 14,115 feet elevation. Make sure you’re comfortable with driving into the clouds with steep hillside and many fun turns. FYI, Pikes Peak Highway is a toll road. Travel back down the mountain to have lunch on a beautiful and scenic drive through Garden of the Gods Park.
Explore historic Rampart Range Road on a natural gravel road along a mountain ridge with amazing views of Pikes Peak and the surrounding Rocky Mountains. Rampart Road was designed and built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1920’s to create a scenic recreation corridor through Pike National Forest. A seasonally open road (annual closure from December 1 to April 1) to Rampart Reservoir brings you to a beautiful shoreline and popular fishing destination (fee area). Continue on Rampart Road (FS 300) to scenic overlooks and keep your eyes open for deer, elk, and bighorn sheep! End with a drive through the beautiful Garden of the Gods and lunch at the visitor center with a panoramic view from the veranda.
Explore historic Rampart Range Road (FS 300) on a natural gravel road along a mountain ridge with amazing views to Pikes Peak and the surrounding Rocky Mountains. Rampart Road was designed and built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1920’s to create a scenic recreation corridor through Pike National Forest. Head south first to the beautiful Rampart Reservoir picnic area (seasonal, restrooms, fee area). Head back north on Rampart Road which has many twists, turns, and climbs through dense forest with views to rock formations. Keep your eyes open for deer, elk, turkey, grouse and moose in the area. Drop down Hotel Gulch Road, which is a rough 4×4 road through a tight gulch with beautiful ponds and passes through the Experimental Station compound. You’ll have incredible views of Pikes Peak from Manitou Lake picnic area (fee area, restrooms).
Drive all the way around Pikes Peak, America’s Mountain, and follow the Gold Camp Road, a historic gold railroad route as a 70-mile tour. The scenery will be spectacular with many overlooks including Pike Peak, Cathedral Peaks, Penrose Reservoir, Eagles Nest, Colorado Springs, and many more. Gold Camp Road is a dirt road that follows a relatively flat path a railroad used to go along. Imagine you’re in a vintage steam train in the 19th century chugging through hand carved tunnels that lead to amazing views in all directions. Keep your eyes open for deer, elk, and bighorn sheep along this area. The east end of Gold Camp Road is blocked off to full-size vehicles as one of the historic tunnels was damaged and is considered unsafe. You’ll find Old Stage Road Riding Stables along your route, which offers horseback riding, cabin rentals, food, and drink. This is a very quaint refuge right along Old Stage Road and deep in the mountains. Old Stage Road is beautiful with great views, many turns, and some moderate grades that lead you to the west side of Colorado Springs. Extend your tour for an amazing meal/drink at the 5-star Broadmoor Resort or just cruise through Colorado Springs and back to Woodland Park.
Explore the scenic roads of the historic Gold Belt area while passing through Fossil Beds National Monument and the town of Florissant. This is a great area to view ranches and historic cabins on your way to the town of Guffey for a meal. This 104-mile tour also brings you to Eleven Mile Reservoir and the town of Lake George. Keep your eyes open for deer, pronghorn antelope, elk, and wild burros. The marina at Eleven Mile Reservoir State Park has paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes you can rent for a quick paddle. Black Tree Resort is an exciting “glamping resort” you can stay at along this route, where you can ride Polaris UTVs with Great Outdoors Adventures or go on horseback rides!
Explore the spectacular South Platte River through Eleven Mile Canyon and dip your feet in the cold and clear water. Backtrack through the Canyon to scenic gravel roads connecting you to beautiful Eleven Mile Reservoir State Park. The park has usual facilities and services including a marina (fee area). If you stay on the County Roads, no fee is required. Keep your eyes open for eagles, deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, and friendly wild donkeys that roam the Reservoir area. Rent a kayak, canoe, or paddle board at the marina for a quick paddle on clam days. Friends and Family Fishing can bring on a fishing trip of a lifetime on the Reservoir. Black Tree Resort is an exciting “glamping resort” you can stay at along this route, where you can ride Polaris UTVs with Great Outdoors Adventures or go on horseback rides! Drive scenic County Road 92/90 to Lake George and back through beautiful Florissant, Colorado.
Explore the historic Rampart Range Road along a high ridge between Woodland Park and Sprucewood on this 82 mile tour. Rampart Road was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s. Stop at Sprucewood Inn for a great meal before heading over to the beautiful South Platte River. Head south through Deckers, Westcreek and scenic Manitou Park. Keep your eyes open for off-road vehicles, deer, elk and Turkey along the way.
Explore historic railroad grades through the historic towns of Victor & Cripple Creek while imagining what train rides used to be like on the Gold Belt Scenic Route. These are dirt & rock roads carved through solid rock and multiple tunnels. This area is rick with rock formations and creeks flowing along the roads. Watch out for deer, turkey, elk, bighorn sheep, and wild burros around Cripple Creek. Keep your eyes on the road as some sections have steep drop-offs, but there is plenty of room to drive through safely. Stop in Cañon City for lunch or drink as part of this 115-mile tour. Victor and Cripple Creek are both historic mining towns with a rich history and modern services. Even Highway 67 used to be the historic Midland Railroad route.
Head west to the Badger Flats area of Pike National Forest. This area has huge Ponderosa Pines savannas and wonderful views to Badger Tarryall Mountains. Tarryall Reservoir is a State Wildlife Area with good fishing and toilets. The 143-mile tour brings you through Jefferson, Bailey, and Deckers. Where you’ll find good places to eat and shop. You’ll drive by Wellington Lake and the beautiful South Platte River with many rock formations. On your way back to Woodland Park, Highway 67 travels through scenic Manitou Park. Keep your eyes open for deer, elk, and pronghorn antelope on this tour.

Take the scenic back roads through Pike National Forest, Arapaho National Forest, and Roosevelt National Forest to the top of the tallest Mountain in Colorado at 14,130 feet above sea level. The Mountain Evans Scenic Byway is the highest paved road in America. You’ll pass through Deckers, Conifer and Evergreen on your way there. This is a 408 miles round-trip.
